"First Snow", by Glynnis Carter
Originally from North East London, Glynnis lived, studied and worked in the North East from 1967 - 2000.
In 2000 she moved to Alston in the North Pennines. Whilst continuing to work as a teacher she studied part time at Newcastle College, Northumbria University and Sunderland University. In 2004, having gained a BA(Hons) in Fine Art, she gave up teaching and began to paint full time.
Glynnis draws inspiration for her paintings from the wild landscapes of the North Penines. Her work is a response to the surrounding hills and moorland, the constantly changing light and weather.
She works instinctively, over several weeks, building up layers of colour and texture, allowing what happens on the canvas during the painting process to determine the evolution of the painting
Although her paintings are not made from studies of specific locations, a visit to her studio reveals just how much she is influenced by the huge landscapes which surround it.
Glynnis is exhibiting at Red Barn, Melkinthorpe from March 6th until April 22nd 2010.
