Andrew's thoughts on The Snow Tree:

This new album is a collection of some of my most recent compositions, plus some traditional numbers. The title track - The Snow Tree - is named after an early memory I have, walking through Berwick one late-autumn afternoon with my mother, and asking "when is it going to snow?" My mother pointed to a large tree, and said when all the leaves have fallen from that tree, it MIGHT snow! Autumn has a special magic, and I always think of the 'Snow Tree' at that time of year. These tracks were recorded in Autumn 2005, so it seemed a natural choice for a title.

During the recording process, I've tried to capture a 'live' feel - the basis of all the songs is a vocal and accompaniment take, played as it would be on stage. Any mistakes, and I did it all again! Some of the songs have overdubbed instruments, where I have tried to enrich the texture and use instruments in a slightly unusual way. About half are left as 'pure' takes - I enjoy the task of pulling out as much emotion and musical interest from two instruments - the voice and guitar, or slightly more unusually, the voice and fiddle.

The fiddle-tune sets were originally intended to be played over a backing of 'found sound' loops, but I ultimately decided to stretch my guitar accompaniment skills and try to get something exciting going between the guitar and fiddle. I was aiming for an illusion of spontaneous interaction.

The Guest
My old band mate from Roll a Penny, mandolin maestro Roger Purves, is featured on 'Devilstick Dawson/Christine's Hornpipe'. These are two tunes that were deliberately intended to be superimposed onto one another. The fiddle and mandolin was tracked in Roger's living-room in Newcastle a couple of months before I started planning the album. We had been practicing playing the two tunes simultaneously for some weeks beforehand, in preparation for my final University fiddle recital, so we set up some mics and re-captured the scary moment!

The Result
After four years of studying traditional music, surrounded by amazing musicians day and night, I was ready to do something really personal and to re-discover my own voice. It was an intense but enjoyable experience and took a lot of work, so I hope it's paid off.
