Roll a Penny present a lively show, combining foot stomping grooves, quirky reels and pensive love tales with a knack for innovative twists and textures.

The trio's sounds feature Katie Doherty's "fantastically pure and powerful voice" and dynamic, versatile piano, the impressive, flowing mandolin & bouzouki styles of Roger purves, plus Andrew Cadie's eclectic concoction of clear, harmonic fiddle-singing and crafty acoustic guitar grooves.

Varied and fresh, these forward-facing traditional musicians have gained recognition in several camps. In 2005 Katie won the coveted MBF Award for Song Creation, while the group was selected to play showcase slots at some of northern England's most influential folk institutions, including Brampton Live! festival, The Sage Gateshead and York's Black Swan Folk Club.

Their 2005 debut CD 'Swingin' Hinnies' was released to enthusiastic reviews and has been featured on folk radio programmes all over the world.

Katie is a phenominal singer, whose voice has limitless appeal. She has been singing folk and jazz since childhood, and Roll a Penny is the latest in a long line of groups she has been involved with. Katie's songs straddle the often risky divide between traditional and contemporary music with ease and integrity - gaining praise from folk and pop fans alike... Besides her work with Roll a Penny, Katie has toured and recorded with the likes of Nitin Sawhney and Kathryn Tickell. Her solo album is due out very soon.

Andrew has gained praise and critical acclaim for his playing, singing, tradition-based songwriting and tune composition. fRoots magazine described his songs as "quite outstanding". His CD 'The Snow Tree' has received excellent reviews all over Europe. Andrew brings the magical art of 'fiddle-singing' to the band.

Roger and Katie

Roger's mandolin and bouzouki playing is about as rock-steady as it comes - his exciting, flowing style was developed in the years he spent living in the west of Ireland, and his repertoire serves as an impressive anthology of dance tunes from Ireland, Northern England, Scotland, North America and Eastern Europe. Roger's creative use of his talent has won him many admirers.
