Alongside the national Wool Week, the North Pennines Wool Group hosted a Wool Event at the North Pennines Centre, Lanehead, in Upper Weardale.

TUE 12 OCT 2010
1pm - 4pm

It was an afternoon to learn about and be inspired by wool, for those with an interest in wool and those yet to discover its possibilities.

The event included practical activities and information about wool. We asked the questions - Farmers, do you really know a good fleece when you see one? Woolworkers, where can you get a good fleece?

The event focussed on wool in various states, from raw fleece through to yarn from the North Pennines – the Swaledale and the Mule, and, of course, the two local breeds – the Blue-faced Leicester and the Teeswater.

For those of you who think that a sheep's a sheep – think again! There are almost a hundred sheep breeds in Britain alone.

We had some pretty special wools to tempt some of the undecided, available from other breeds including Shetland, Gotland, BowmontXShetland, & Hebridean.

There was a chance to try using the fleeces to spin, weave, knit, make felt. Visitors also were given the chance to sort and process fleeces.

North Pennines and other British wools were available to compare and for sale.
