The annual Northumberland Art Tour expands beyond its county boundaries to include a cluster of artists from the North Pennines.

If you make the trip to the edge of the known world, taking the famously scenic A686 over Hartside or over the moors from Hexham, you will reach a land described as one of the last great wildernesses left in England. Although not much more than half-an-hour's drive from Hexham or Penrith, you will find yourself amongst the magnificent hills and moors of the North Pennines.

In contrast to the wilderness - or perhaps because of it and certainly inspired by it - you will discover a rich and varied seam of exceptional talent. Under the spell of Cross Fell and the upland magic of Alston Moor this is a fine place to visit and an exciting place to live and work as an artist.

The artists in the North Pennines cluster are Glynnis Carter, Paul Hickey & Norma Hickey, John Fowler, Lionel Playford, Jules Cadie, photographer Alan Hayward and felt-maker Ellie Langley.

If you plan a circular route, you might like to refer to the map below. It will take you over the hills and into the valleys of the South Tyne, Tees and Wear, in addition to the Allen valleys, and into the counties of Northumberland, Co. Durham and Cumbria.

All of us are open each weekend with the exception of Ellie (closed on Sat 5 June) and Jules (closed 12 ,13 and 19 June).

To complement the Art Tour, Gossipgate Gallery in Alston is showcasing a selection of our work in their Summer Show, which runs until 17 August.

If you'd like to linger longer in our North Pennines landscapes, Ellie and Jules offer B&B accommodation. Ellie at Slack House Farm runs the only off-grid B&B in England, with all energy generated through renewables. Jules at High Ashgill is a paler shade of green, with a smaller turbine but lashings of solar-heated water. Contact either of them through their websites. Also, Lionel offers Pennine Painting art courses.
